Back With a Vengeance and Seeking an Incredible Victory over Trump’s Regime
And an Apology for my absence from the site
I am back and I am heartily sorry for being absent from the site for almost a month. Now the kill radius of an excuse is zero point zero meters, but it was a difficult month. I had to go off of all of my medications for two weeks because they could interfere with allergy testing, which meant that I was unable to sleep, suffered a lot of sinus and drainage which caused me to cough all night. I was also working to finish my last doctoral class of the semester, had Judy have to go into the hospital for a heart episode, which ended up causing me to miss my former denomination’s clergy and chaplains conference. That created a shitstorm because the bishop didn’t believe that she was sick, questioned my integrity and honor by calling me a liar, to which I said that “I’m too old for this shit” and tendered my resignation. I am now a retired priest without a church home and I am okay with that. When all that was done I have to get through that last few weeks of teaching my history classes which was finished Tuesday with finals, in the midst of which we dealt with an orgy of spring cleaning at home. Every night I was so exhausted that I had a hard time staying awake, much less able to think clearly enough to write anything other than some responses to other Substacks. That’s a hell of an excuse and I dare anyone else to try it. After all, nobody got killed by it. If you do use it, please give me credit.
So on to the article.
Today marked the beginning of the Battle of Midway which lasted from 4 to 6 June 1944. It was one of the most surprising naval battles in history in which a vastly outnumbered U.S. Navy task force defeated a massive Japanese Navy fleet, sinking four of the aircraft carriers that attacked Pearl Harbor and had wreaked havoc across the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The defeat crippled the Japanese Naval Air Force, killing many of its most experienced pilots and flight crews. The battle was a turning point in the war against Japan. After it, though still outnumbered, the Americans went on the offensive and the Japanese never did again. Walter Lord, whose history of the battle is still the classic presentation of it wrote:
“Against overwhelming odds, with the most meager resources, and often at fearful self-sacrifice, a few determined men reversed the course of the war in the Pacific. Japan would never again take the offensive. Yet the margin was thin—so narrow that almost any man there could say with pride that he personally helped turn the tide at Midway. It was indeed, as General Marshall said in Washington, “the closest squeak and the greatest victory.”
Over the past month the criminal Trump Regime has continued its attacks against every American committed to the rule of law, our Constitution, and the ideals that our country was founded upon. His actions, and those of the members of his Regime have had me yelling and screaming so many times this month even when I was too exhausted to write. However, I have called my Senators and Representative numerous times pleading with them to stop his actions. I am ashamed to say that my heart is consumed with hate for them and I hope that they meet justice, al la Mussolini. While Trump likes his stakes well done, Mussolini got served rare. I really don’t care how Trump, Vance, Musk, Hegseth, Rubio, Bondi, Noem, or any of the other Mar a Lago Fascists are served. I am not advocating violence, just imagining historical and cosmological justice being served over a spit.
I will continue to resist, and my writing here will become much more frequent. I will write every chance that I get to show the Trump Regime’s criminality in the light of history. I know too many people that I know who are being harmed by them, and they include my international students, fellow veterans, friends in the Federal Government, and too many others to name here.
Trump wants to appear invincible and his victory inevitable, but he will fall, and his criminal regime along with him. His cult like followers will be astounded by his collapse, much as were the followers of Hitler and so many other dictators.
In a time when Trump continues to attack everything that made our country the envy of people the world over, and brought people seeking refuge, justice, and a better life here by the millions, we must look to the examples of Americans who won victories against all odds.
As Walter Lord wrote about the men who won the Battle of Midway:
“They had no right to win. Yet they did, and in doing so they changed the course of a war … Even against the greatest of odds, there is something in the human spirit — a magic blend of skill, faith, and valor — that can lift men from certain defeat to incredible victory.”
We need that today. It is time to fight.
Welcome back, Steve. You’ve had quite a time of it.
I'm with you, Steve.
You are so fine.
I see no need for apology.
We all need to take care
of our own health first.
This is an endurance ordeal
we are all in the midst of.
