The classic 1986 comedy film Ruthless People always comes to my mind when I hear moronic MAGA-Republicans like Tommy Tuberville open their mouths. The movie which stars Danny DeVito, Bette Midler, Judge Reinhold and the late Bill Pullman is hilarious. But, the scene that comes to mind when I think of Senator Tuberville this scene automatically enters my mind. In it, Pullman is trying to steal ransom money from Judge Reinhold, who has just received it from Danny DeVito in a scam with DeVito’s wife played by Bette Midler.
I can see Tuberville playing Pullman’s part. Tuberville must be the stupidest man ever elected to the United States Senate. I am a historian and try as I might I cannot think of any others who compare. Of course, it is possible that some might have been as stupid, they were just fortunate not to have live audio and video feeds to broadcast their imbecility around the country and recorded for posterity.
I am thinking about the pro-Nazi Republicans of 1941 who must have been defecating bloodworms in the Senate Cloakroom when Hitler declared war on the United States after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, and no reporters were there with an iPhone to ask them when they left the Senate chambers: “Senator Scheißkopf, what do you think of Herr Hitler today?” And then to hear the reply, “Well Barbara, he kind of had to, he’s not a bad guy, and if Roosevelt hadn’t provoked the Japs, Hitler wouldn’t need to defend them., would he? If the Jews hadn’t complained about Hitler, Roosevelt wouldn’t have had such a hard on against Hitler, giving the British all our weapons to fight him. (Awkward pause) You’re Jewish aren’t you?”
But, I digress, all cheekiness aside, Senator Tuberville is stupid and racist to boot. Not only that, he is willing to put national security at risk by delaying critical appointments to key military command positions, in order to keep women who volunteered to serve our country from getting vital care for problem pregnancies, not all dealing with abortion, that is unavailable where they are stationed. Though not an issue in this situation Tuberville has voted against funding medical care for personnel exposed to toxic burn pits, and other issues affecting the lives of our military personnel. In my mind as a career military officer and combat veteran is despicable. He even started a charity to help veterans, but most of the money doesn’t go to help veterans. Despite things he does to harm military personnel and national security he says that "there is nobody more military than me." Double despicable.
But on to Tuberville’s stupidity. When asked about the three branches of the U.S. Government, the Einstein of the Gridiron said “the senate, the house, and the executive.” Not quite. He also said that World War II in Europe was to "to free Europe of socialism.” Wrong again. The Nazis were socialist in part of their name only, the outlawed the actual Socialist Party of Germany which was the actual socialist party in Germany, shut down their newspapers, and either murdered or sent their leaders to Concentration Camps. But wait, there’s more, the United States was allied with the Uncle Joe Stalin’s Soviet Union during the war to defeat Hitler.
Speaking of Russia, when Russia launched its genocidal war against Ukraine, Tuberville said that Putin invaded Ukraine because: “He can’t feed his people. It’s a communist country, so he can’t feed his people, so they need more farmland.” I guess someone forget to tell him that the Soviet Union fell over three decades before Putin invaded Ukraine.
Likewise, he thinks that abortion can happen after birth, in February he commented: “a society that allows abortion up to and past the moment of birth, after the baby has been born, isn't progressive. It's barbaric and it's murder." The Dirt Roads Scholar from Arkansas doesn’t seem to understand that a live baby can’t be aborted.
And this about the Presidency of Al Gore: “I remember in 2000 Al Gore was president, United States, president-elect, for 30 days – 30 days – and after 30 days, it got to the Supreme Court and the Supreme Court says, no, George Bush is going to be the president. That’s the problem we’ll get into when we do a lot of guessing, and that’s all it is right now.”
But enough of his stupidity, let’s go back to his unrepentant racism. I wrote this not long after joining Substack when Tuberville first exposed himself as a White Nationalist and racist, and identified what almost anyone already knew, that the MAGA/GOP is the party of White Nationalism and racism. I’ll spare quoting from it but a cursory glance at it will inform you of that undisputed fact.

However, this week Tuberville continued on into his Temple of Doom by repeating that White Nationalism isn’t racist. Evidently, even after his debacle in May the Arkansas Einstein couldn’t be bothered to look up the definition of it, nor could his incompetent staff tell him.
The Mariam Webster Dictionary defines it as “one of a group of militant white people who espouse white supremacy (see WHITE SUPREMACY sense 1) and advocate enforced racial segregation.”
The Cambridge Dictionary defines a White Nationalist as: “someone who believes that white people have their own racial and national identity (= what makes someone who they are) and should have the most power, authority, and rights in a country, usually based on the idea that they are better in some way than people from other groups.”
But of course Tuberville thinks that White Nationalists are “patriotic Americans”, “MAGA Republicans”, people who shouldn’t be kept out of the military. If he hadn’t figured that out after his remarks in May he has to be an incredibly stupid racist. On Monday night doubled down on those remarks and told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins: “If we’re going to do with most white people out of the military, we’ve got huge problems…. white nationalists” simply “have a few different beliefs.” On Tuesday he grudgingly backed down and said that While Nationalism is racist. I wonder who started pulling out his toes nails to extract that very minor concession, since he doesn’t mean it. By the way Tuberville hasn’t let up on endangering our national security as China keeps upping the ante in the Pacific, North Korea keeps making threats, Iran is stepping up its aggression, and let’s not forget Putin’s genocidal war against Ukraine. But for Tuberville national security isn’t important so long as he can curry favor with his misogynistic, anti-women, pro forced birth Talibanlike Christian Nationalist supporters, who unhappy with simply being able to ban, restrict, and criminalize abortion in their states want to impose it nationwide. Their tactics are much like the South just before the Civil War, using the Courts to impose their will where the voters won’t.
Tuberville is stupid. He is a racist. He is a White Nationalist. He curries favor with the most extreme people in the United States. He cannot be trusted with the national security of the United States or the lives of its citizens. He combines the worst, he is both stupid and racist.
Both painfully hilarious and painfully true. Tuberville’s abject stupidity deserves a stage play. If only he weren’t in a place to do so much harm.
