I finished one of the major projects for my doctoral program a couple of hours ago, and as I was sending the copy to my professor I saw the news that Gordon Lightfoot had passed away. I cannot count just how many of his songs fill my heart. Two years ago one of my students, a ninth grader, asked me if he was still alive. I was really surprised that such a young man even knew who Gordon was, obviously he is the product of parents with a good taste in music.
I have listened to Gordon’s music since I was a kid, it was on the AM Top 40 stations, and it always told stories of people, real and imagined. His music was that of the heart and soul, so simple yet complex, and always elegant. Some of his songs were also used in soundtracks of films and television shows, and the writers that used them were often brilliant.
So here are just a few of my favorites, including one included in the soundtrack of The Blacklist. My did James Spader and the show’s writers use it well.
Have a wonderful night and tomorrow, and remember the the blessing of music wrought by such people touched by the Muse. So tonight before bed here are some of my favorites. Rest In Peace Gordon Lightfoot. You will be missed but never forgotten.
