This is the first of two articles that I will post today.
As a preface this is how I am feeling. I cannot celebrate our independence when we are now living in a dictatorship where one man’s word is above all written law and where the Supreme Court has buttressed his dictatorship. However, I can remember the principles of the Declaration of Independence, and remember how Abraham Lincoln cited them in his Gettysburg Address:
“Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure…
It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us — that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion — that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
This is a very melancholy Independence Day for me. I feel betrayed having served our country nearly 40 years in the military. I feel that the country and people that I swore an oath to the Constitution to serve and protect have been betrayed by MAGA and sold to Trump into tyranny and slavery. I fear that it will be years before the edifice of Trump’s dictatorship will collapse, as even if Trump dies, his successors will be as bad or worse until they are driven from power. Even then the damage will take a generation to repair, while our reputation in the world will take far longer to restore. I am ashamed to be an American today, but I will continue to resist in the hopes that we will free ourselves from this tyrannical Regime.
It is now our duty to fight a tyrannical Regime and Dictator as our forefathers did in 1776, and those loyal to the Union did in the Civil War.

Steve, I have seen several people who are part of the resistance commenting "I am ashamed to be an American today."
Please don't be. The America you are fighting for is something to be proud of, despite all its faults.
It is trump and all his supporters who should be ashamed - deeply, deeply ashamed. The fact that they are not, and rejoice in their cruelties, is the reason that they will NOT succeed.
People with the hearts of TRUE Americans see them for what they are - and those numbers are growing.
Remember that when you are feeling so down. Lift up your chin and sing:
"My country, 'tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims' pride,
From ev'ry mountainside
Let freedom ring!"
Those words are as true today as when they were first written. MLK knew whereof he spoke.
The Statue of Liberty will soon be decked out in cheesy, tacky gold paint and holding a big T instead of a torch.
