“Most Evil is Done by People Who Never Make up their Minds to be Good or Evil”

Dear Friends and Readers, In light of the current Republican Christian Nationalist assaults on freedom in many states and their open support and approval of violent White Nationalist and Neo-Nazi organizations, I feel that it is time to sound a warning from history and cinema. While most of my research, writing, and teaching over the past decade has been on the Civil War Era, and what followed. However, the bulk of the previous thirty years was devoted to the study of modern Germany, particularly the Weimar and Nazi periods, the Holocaust, and the War Crimes trials following the war. Between the study of what happened in Nazi Germany and for hundreds of years to the present day, I am ever cognizant to threats to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Thus when I see a mass movement that prizes the racist, authoritarian, and antisemitic ideology of either, or both, running rampant in the United States and using the police power of government to restrict the rights of the majority of citizens, I must speak out.
