Babette, I don’t think that this is hyperbole, and I know exactly what I am talking about in understanding how Hitler captivated and mobilized his supporters. However, many knew better and supported his worst actions to to either protect their interests or to enrich themselves. Likewise, many of the quickest converts to National Socialism, after the Nazi takeover, other than the non-Nazi conservatives, were German Communists who hated the Republic and the Socialists as much as Hitler. As you correctly noted, the fault lies in ourselves.
