“Theirs is the Highest and Purest Democracy” Rabbi Roland Gittelsohn’s Dedication Sermon at Iwo Jima

Dear Friends at Substack, In a bit over a week from today we will be observing Memorial Day. I tend to become quite reflective around Memorial Day, based upon my long service in the Army and Navy, as well as growing up as a “Navy Brat.” I have known far too men and women who gave their lives in the service of our democracy, to pass this day by without a thought. Those I served alongside represented every race and creed, but they were all Americans, even those who had not yet become citizens. The latter gave their lives for an ideal that still waited fulfillment.
